Every user is clear that notifications from our mobile have become vital to know what is happening at all times. Although not many are in favor of having a mobile phone with sound, the fact that the mobile lights up is always synonymous with the fact that we have received a notice on our smartphone. In addition to the fact that there are many applications and alerts that we receive daily, so it is more than necessary to have several elements that call our attention so as not to overlook anything that reaches our terminal.
For example, Samsung mobiles have several options in this regard, including the famous Edge screen, to be notified and its lighting, which we will see in depth. In addition, we must remember that this functionality takes advantage of the screen of our phone to surround the screen and notify us through different types of animations, colors and even texts.
How to activate it on our smartphone?
There is no doubt that the current trend in mobile phone design has led us to want smartphones in which the screen is not interfered with by any type of hole or LED. And with the passage of time we are seeing how we are getting closer and closer to getting a smartphone in which its front is 100% occupied by the screen.
This is why it is quite difficult to see terminals in which there are other spaces for different elements, such as the mobile fingerprint sensor, the mythical physical buttons or the notification LEDs
In addition, for a few years Samsung has decided to implement an alternative that, although it does not work the same, in some circumstances it will serve as a great substitute for the classic LED of the notifications that every mobile of the firm had. We are not referring to the so-called Edge lighting functionality. Basically, this tool, which the South Korean firm began to implement on its smartphones, uses some pixels on the mobile’s OLED screen to alert us every time we receive a new message or notice on our mobile device.
It should also be borne in mind that this function is a complement to the Edge Apps, which have been among Samsung mobiles for some time. They even allow us to open programs by sliding from the side of the screen. Although what we are interested in is being able to customize this light on the panel of our terminal at will. However, for this we must know how to enable it. Therefore, to activate this function we have to follow these steps in the terminal:
- Let’s go to Settings.
- We select the Notifications section.
- Then we will have to click on Summary> Summary settings.
- Then, tap on Edge lighting style.
Once we have followed these steps we will be able to enjoy this functionality that Samsung phones bring. Although, in the event that you still have a version lower than Android 11, you will need to follow the following steps to enable this very useful tool on your Galaxy:
- Access the Settings again.
- Enter the Screen section.
- Then, tap on Edge Screen.
- Select Edge Lighting.
- Then, click on Style.
When you are in this section, either following the first steps or the latter, the truth is that you will reach the same point. In it, you can customize the color, the effects, the width, the transparency and the duration of this functionality on the edge of our terminal that we will explain in detail later.
In addition, if we select Show edge lighting we can choose whether to replace the notification pop-ups when the screen is on, off or in both cases. It will even leave us the option to choose those apps that can activate the edge lighting when we receive a notification on our Android device.
Customize it for your Samsung apps
After having enabled this function in our Galaxy and, especially, after activating a good number of apps to use this Samsung tool, it is time to take action. That is, it is time to customize its color so that we quickly know what type of notification we have received depending on which app we have configured. In this way, it will be much easier to know if the alert we have received is important or not. Therefore, these are the different possibilities that we have available.
Within the Edge screen lighting settings, and once we go to Edge lighting style we can choose the following effects: Basic, wave, bubble, Multicolor, Heart, Fireworks, Eclipse and Echo.
Then, within the possibility of changing the color for one of those that comes by default or, if we prefer, we can select a custom Color. We can even add a keyword so that we pay more or less attention to said alert each time it reaches our smartphone. In this section we will have to enter a text, so we will have to put the filters we want for a specific custom color. If it were WhatsApp, we put WhatsApp. If it’s Twitter, then the same. We add it and the option to choose the color from the button will appear below.
Then, we will have the last phase that Samsung offers us to customize this functionality on our mobile. To do this, we will have to click on the advanced tab. Once inside, we can choose the type of Transparency, Width and Duration. We will only have to slide the bar that appears in the following image to be able to choose its configuration.
Edge lighting not working for you?
One of the first aspects that must be taken into account is that with the arrival of One UI to Samsung terminals, the location of this function has changed. If you have a version lower than One UI 3, you will continue to have the Edge lighting section on your Galaxy within Screen. On the other hand, if you are one of those users who have decided to update their smartphone software, you will find this tool in the notifications section.
Although it is not the only point that we will have to know, since it is important to note that this function of Samsung mobiles requires that we have both the Do not disturb mode and the Always on Display of our mobile device disabled at all times. This means that, if we prefer to have either of these two functions, we will have to forget about using this type of notice for the apps on our phone.
Everything will depend on the tastes of each user, although as you have seen in the previous images there are a multitude of designs and colors to be able to customize the alerts that reach our mobile. However, it would be good if the warning remained on the screen, as when we have the ambient screen or Always on Display activated. So it will depend on you if you prefer one tool or another to give a different touch to your mobile.
